Participant #1
Have you tried A.A and/or treatment for your addiction? Yes, 3 times 8/26/2007
If treatment-What type of treatment did you try? Detoxification, 12 step out patient program. No i did not work i could not
be in a room full of 15 people and share all my deepest fears and problems with a room full of strangers. I still use drugs
I've been lowering my doses and i switched to methadone 10 mgs a day to help get myself off. I am looking for online
services where i can read info, do work on my own and chat if needed. 8/26/2007
If A.A./N.A-How many meetings have you attended? I attended an NA meeting but i quit going because at that meeting
there was a guy who asked me if i wanted to buy drugs off of him. 8/26/2007
Have you tried any other treatment/self-help programs? No but i am going to start seeing a psychologist to talk about my
problems and i started attending church regularly to ask god to help me. 8/26/2007
If you are still using, what would help you in overcoming your addiction? Strength. I need to have the ability to say no to
myself when the cravings start or i start not to feel good if i don't take anything. It seems i can handle getting the flu but
as soon as i start to detox off of drugs I've got to have them and the flu and detoxing have pretty much the same
symptoms. Also info on tips to help me keep my mind off of the drugs. Things i can do when i start to crave. But most of
all the willpower to say NO. 8/26/2007
Is it important for the addict to take full responsibility for their addiction? Yes! I've messed up so much and hurt so many
people that i love and i do realize that now. And i have to take responsibility. I have to face my demon's that i created.
8/26/2007
Does an employed work environment stop the addict from learning the coping skills to be sober? No if you mean working
while trying to become sober. I think that when i work it helps me keep busy and take my mind off of things. The money is
the problem but if you have a love one hold onto your money and manage it until you can handle it i suggest that.
8/26/2007
Is self-esteem building important in recovery from drug addiction? Yes, i believe so. I know i am always down on myself
and when i feel down and depressed then i want to do drugs. 8/26/2007
Is alcohol and drug addiction a brain disease? In some ways i say yes. After the addiction is set in and you are totally
overcome by the drugs then yes it becomes a disease. 8/26/2007
Can an addict ever fully recover from their addiction? Idon'tt think because even 20 years from now and I'm clean i don't
think ill ever be able to take a drug again for fear that the pleasure feeling you get will come back and ill want it again.
8/26/2007
Please leave all other comments here. Very helpful website..thanks.... 8/26/2007
Participant #2
Have you tried A.A and/or treatment for your addiction? Yes, once in residential treatment (heroin detox). Yes have
attended AA and NA meetings on and off for several years 8/31/2007
If treatment-What type of treatment did you try? 30 day primary treatment in residential rehab following 12 step
programme, then a further 6 weeks in secondary care
No it didn't work, i relapsed within a week of returning home and am still using 2 years later and due to go into detox
again shortly 8/31/2007
If A.A./N.A-How many meetings have you attended? No idea exactly how many meetings i have attended over the years,
a lot! Was successful for a short time after i had got clean/sober, have never tried to get clean/sober purely through
meetings, i do not think it would work for me, but is good as part of a support network. 8/31/2007
Have you tried any other treatment/self-help programs? I have tried methadone, reducing slowly over a period of time but
not been successful in getting clean that way. I have tried Subutex, that was successful, however i think that was more
due to the fact that i was very new to opiates at that stage and had a very small habit for a very short time. I have also
tried cold turkey and just do not have the willpower to get past 2 days.. 8/31/2007
If you are still using, what would help you in overcoming your addiction? A good support network available 24/7. I am
tempted to try a rapid detox that is medicated to reduce withdrawal symptoms, however, it is just so expensive and using
addicts just do not have pots of cash for these treatments. 8/31/2007
Is it important for the addict to take full responsibility for their addiction? Absolutely 100% 8/31/2007
Does an employed work environment stop the addict from learning the coping skills to be sober? I think that depends on
the person, i have managed to hold down full time job while using for many years. What i do think is that being employed
has held me in my addiction longer though as i have not wanted to lose my job through taking a huge chunk of time out
to go into residential detox 8/31/2007
Is self-esteem building important in recovery from drug addiction? Yes, very important 8/31/2007
Is alcohol and drug addiction a brain disease? Possibly, i have read so many conflicting reports that i am not sure, but i
think that i do lean towards the possibility that you can be pre-disposed to addictive tendencies 8/31/2007
Can an addict ever fully recover from their addiction? I don't think so, no, to think that is complacent, i think addicts just
like to lose the label 'addict' at the earliest opportunity, there is no shame in being an addict in recovery 8/31/2007

Participant #2
What is your drug of choice? methamphetamine 12/19/2007
What type of treatment did you try? Long term in-patient treatment 12/19/2007
How many treatment programs have you been in? One 12/19/2007

the level with privileges to work 12/19/2007
Would you recommend residential treatment to a friend needing help? ABSOLUTELY 12/19/2007
If you were going to create a treatment program what would it include? Long term so that one learns a new way of living
over and over and over until it becomes habitual. I believe it took me 6 months in treatment before I actually got real and
honest to start in my recovery 12/19/2007
If you were going to create a treatment program what would it NOT include? The treatment program I was in had men and
women in the program but we weren't allowed to communicate unless in group, this was somewhat discouraging because
most of us have a lot to learn about the opposite gender and relationships; how to interact without being on a sexual
level 12/19/2007
Please leave all other comments here! I truly thank God every day that I was arrested, incarcerated, and allowed to go to
treatment...if not for that kind of intervention I would most likely be dead and wouldn't have been reunited with my family
as I am today. I COULD NOT and WOULD NOT quit, I was an IV drug user and thought I would die that way. Since my first
arrest in 2005 the media has attacked my case and exploited me and my child, nevertheless I am a success and will
continue to prove them wrong. I believe that addicts need HELP, NOT JAIL AND PRISON and I am interested in standing
up for this and would do what it takes to spread the word and help others who are still suffering in their active addiction.

Sample survey responses on 'Did Residential treatment Work'.
Defeat Addictions will be taking followup surveys on addicts who have been court ordered to attend A.A., outpatient, and
inpatient treatment within our community. The purpose of the surveys is to determine what is working and what is not. At
this time there is no reliable method to determine the effectiveness of court ordered treatment. The ultimate goal is to
weed out programs that don't work and introduce new effective programs that would be beneficial to addicts in their time
of need. All alcoholics/addicts will need to be included for reliable results.
For an alcoholic/addict to qualify to take the survey they must meet the following requirements:
1-18 years or older.
2-Have an alcohol and/or drug addiction problem.
3-Registered with Defeat Addictions within one week after being sentenced to attend treatment.
4-Court ordered to attend a diseased based treatment program (A.A. meetings, outpatient, inpatient).
5-Court ordered to attend A.A. meetings and/or treatment longer than 6-months.
6-Completed all court ordered requirements(meetings,probation,classes,etc)
7-Been released from all court authority and probation for a period of at least 1-year.
-All individually completed written surveys will be made available to the public upon request.
The Courtesy Checkup Does treatment really help addicts achieve long-term sobriety?
|
The only way to determine if a court ordered treatment program is effective in helping addicts achieve long-term sobriety
is to do a 1-year follow up after the client has been released from all court order sanctions and probation. Claiming
success while clients are still under the authority of the court is deceptive and lieing to the public. Also, most addicts who
have experienced long-term court sanctions usually learn how not to get caught using again. Judging success on
rearrest records is useless and proves nothing. Success is abstinence from use of all alcohol and drugs.

8 Worked-27 Didn't Work
1 Worked-4 Didn't Work
Our Research Surveys Are Being Conducted:
1-To determine what current alcoholics/addicts beliefs are about drug addiction.
2-To determine what recovered alcoholics/addicts beliefs are about drug addiction.
3-To determine what helped recovered alcoholics/addicts recover from drug addiction.
4-To determine what is stopping alcoholics/addicts from recovering from drug addiction.
5-To discover whether treatment is helping alcoholics/addicts achieve long-term sobriety.
6-To discover whether Alcoholics Anonymous is helping alcoholics/addicts achieve long-term sobriety.
7-To provide taxpayers with a creditable report on court-ordered treatment success and failure rates.
One of the biggest deceptions portrayed by the addiction field is treatment providers claiming success in the face of
contradicting evidence. How do they do this? It's quite simple, they: (1) choose only good prognosis cases to evaluate;(2)
keep follow-up periods as short as possible; (3) avoid control and comparison groups; (4) choose measures carefully; (5)
focus only on alcohol outcomes; (6) use liberal definitions of success; (7) rely solely upon self-report and (8) always
declare victory regardless of findings. ...And when confronted with failure rates-blame it on a disease! What people don't
realize is most of these programs are only benefiting those with a vested interest in using addicts to make a quick buck.
We as taxpayers are just wasting millions on treatment programs proven not to work. We believe the techniques and
beliefs currently being taught in the addiction field is causing addicts more harm than good. The current system will not
be changed until the public is educated in treatment providers true failure rates.
Defeat Addictions proposes that a courtesy checkup is done on all addicts forced into treatment. This check up will occur
1-year after their client is released from aftercare, has completed drug court successfully, and finished probation. The
reason for this is to get the truth as to if their program really helped their clients achieve long-term sobriety. Addicts have
a tendency to be more honest about their drug use when they have been released from all authority's pressure and don't
have to check in with a drug counselor. The checkup will be done by an independent organization with no ties to the
addiction field and/or the courts. The results will be published in the newspaper for the public to decide if what
professionals are using is helpful or not. Shouldn't we be spending our money on programs that really work and stop
funding those that don't? It's time for a change within the addiction field and we as a community can make it happen.
Success is when the addict maintains abstinence from all alcohol and drug use.
